New Releases: 'The Iron Lady,' 'A Separation' and 'Pariah'
It's almost 2012, which -- according to your height appealing about Mayan civilization -- either means the start of the apocalypse or the start of a completely new year. (Fingers joined for your latter!) Regardless if you are planning for your finish days, you'll find still plenty of good movies to check out inside the theaters (don't get worried, you does not need to spend one further several hours watching 'Alvin as well as the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked'). From 'The Iron Lady' to 'The Girl While using Dragon Tattoo' to 'Hugo,' let's take a look as of this week's new releases, along with some films that are already round the silver screen. LIMITED RELEASES 'The Iron Lady' What's the story: With no new country wide releases now, we use former Uk Pm Margaret Thatcher. 'The Iron Lady,' that you have formerly discovered if you would like the 2010 Oscar race, features Meryl Streep as Britain's conservative icon. While Streep's portrayal of Thatcher has riled some within the Atlantic, many have famous her performance. Not to be completely surpassed, experts also provide recognized actor Jim Broadbent's role as Dennis Thatcher, Margaret's husband. The film focuses on the occasions just before England's participation inside the Falklands War. Box office projection: Since 'The Iron Lady' is simply in limited release now, we will probably wait to produce a box office projection until Jan. 12, when the film hits theaters country wide. [Showtimes & Tickets] 'A Separation' What's the story: This Iranian film notifies the story from the couple who finish off separating. Eventually, the husband is billed with attacking his father's senior citizens caretaker, and possibly resulting in her miscarriage. Iran's official candidate to find the best Language film at next year's Oscars, 'A Separation' has become critical acclaim from film festivals around the globe -- pretty for just about any movie getting a reported budget of just $500,000. [Showtimes & tickets] 'Pariah' What's the story: Another film critic favorite, 'Pariah' follows Alike, a 17-year-old African-American going to terms along with her identity just like a lesbian. Adepero Oduye, who plays Alike, remains nominated for top Female Lead within the Independent Spirit Honours. Taken, 'Pariah' won the Excellence in Cinematography award as of this year's Sundance Film Festival. [Showtimes & Tickets] IN THEATERS If the limited releases aren't inside your sweet zone (or aren't being proven within your hometown), don't worry: there are lots of movies already in theaters. Fresh off last week's $44 million opening is 'Mission: Impossible -- Ghost Protocol,' the fourth film inside the Tom Cruise film franchise. This time around around around, the mission considered impossible features a jaw-losing sequence where Cruise dangles within the Burj Khalifa, the greatest building in the world. People trying to find something a little more severe may want to have a look at 'War Equine,' the Steven Spielberg-directed flick using the award-winning stage production, which follows the street from the equine through the First World War. Speaking about Spielberg, furthermore, you will find 'The Adventures of Tintin,' the animated film he directed and co-produced with 'Lord in the Rings' master Healing For Healing For Peter Jackson. Also for him or her, there is a choice of 'Hugo,' 'Arthur Christmas,' 'The Muppets' or (sigh) 'Alvin as well as the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked' (we'd go for 'Hugo,' our pick for top movie of year). The dark murder mystery of 'The Girl While using Dragon Tattoo' will attract adult audiences, while 'We Bought a Zoo' is great fare for the whole family. And, if you wish to visit full-scale and celebrate the 2012 apocalypse, more often than not there's 'New Year's Eve.' [Photo: TWC] Follow Moviefone on Twitter Like Moviefone on Facebook

Christmas Movie Trivia: 'A Muppet Christmas Carol' and More
Over at Huffington Post, Jordan Zakarin has put together an in-depth, behind-the-scenes look at some of your favorite Christmas movies -- from 'Love Actually' to 'It's a Wonderful Life.' One of the most bizarre bits of Christmas movie trivia, however, involves ghosts -- and not just because it happened during a production of 'A Christmas Carol.' The night before recording songs as Kermit for the first time on 'A Muppet Christmas Carol,' Steve Whitmire said he was visited by the recently deceased Jim Henson, the man behind the Muppets and Kermit's voice, in a dream for some reassurance. "He stopped, and there was a thoughtful gesture Jim would do where he would take both of his index fingers and put them under his chin, and he did that and thought and he said, 'It will pass,'" Whitmire told MuppetCentral.com. "Which is exactly what Jim would have said. You would have to really know Jim to know this, but that's exactly what he would have said. Then he turned and he said, 'I've really got to run...' and he took off out the door." Spooky, scary! For more Christmas movie trivia, head over to Huffington Post. 'Game Of Thrones' Season Two Trailer: Cold Winds
In "Bet on Thrones," the intense Braavos swordsman Syrio Forel trained his youthful protg Arya Stark to "see together with your eyes" and "hear together with your ears." Within the situation from the completely new "Bet on Thrones" season two preview, I'd echo Syrio's knowledge and encourage you to definitely listen very carefully. Though you will find lots of beautiful pictures displayed worth gawking at, it is the words you are hearing which make this new "Thrones" footage so captivating. Particularly, they are what of Stannis Baratheon: more youthful brother from the late King Robert, older brother of self-anointed renegade King Renly, and also the guy who'd sit upon the Iron Throne. "My buddy left no trueborn beneficiaries," drones the awesome voice of Stannis, performed by actor Stephen Dillane, as images of the several "Bet on Thrones" gamers still within the mix (see: no Ned Stark) flow in all directions. "By right and birth and bloodstream I actually do this very day lay claim that they can the Iron Throne of Westeros. Let all true males declare their loyalty. The Iron Throne is mine by right. They'll bend the knee or I'll destroy them. The cold winds are rising." Greatly a guy who'll break before he ever bends, Stannis is among the most significant figures within the "An Audio Lesson of Ice and Fire" series, and despite the fact that we do not see him within this new trailer, his presence dangles heavily. Mark my words: Stannis isn't a guy it's easy to forget. "Bet on Thrones" returns to Cinemax in April 2012. What have you think about the most recent "Bet on Thrones" preview? Remember Pearl Harbor, and 5 Other Stories You'll Be Talking About Today
Also in today’s edition of The Broadsheet: David Fincher’s Dragon Tattoo quote machine hums along… Steven Soderbergh may take a Bitter Pill… Is the Daldry circling the drain?… Don’t look now, but Grown Ups 2 may yet be upon us… and more. · It was on this date in 1941 that, following a surprise Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor that killed 2,402 Americans while wounding another 1,282, the United States was induced into World War II. Meet a survivor here. Or read the poignant story of a disbanding survivor’s group here. Or hear concerns about another Pearl Harbor here. Either way, 70 years later amid the silly season of idiot celebrities who can’t separate themselves from their phones or other insufferable pop-cultural bluster, let’s try to keep this one, most essential consideration in mind. · Elsewhere, David Fincher is still poking at the media, this time about the process that led to casting Rooney Mara in The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo: “I wanted to say, ‘Are you really calling me to influence the casting of a movie?’ I was nave about it, to be honest. It wasn’t like there were 5,000 girls in black leggings and goth skull makeup lining up outside on the street. But a lot of the press and the bloggers made it seem like the search for the next Scarlett O’Hara.” [NYT] · Steven Soderbergh and his frequent collaborator, the screenwriter Scott Z. Burns (Contagion, The Informant!, The Man From U.N.C.L.E.) are close to moving forward with The Bitter Pill, a thriller about a woman whose dependency on anti-anxiety medication jumps sharply as her incarcerated husband’s released date nears. Summit Entertainment is reportedly throwing the green light. [Deadline] · Richard Rushfield says what we’re all thinking but might be too polite to acknowledge about the latest trailer for Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close: “It looks like it might just be the worst movie ever made. It looks absolutely horrifying. It looks like someone went and used 9/11 as a set-up to remake Pay It Forward. […] The only good thing to be said about this is since they got all those people together they only will ruin one film this year. On their own, they could have gone off and ruined a dozen between them.” Ouch. [Rushfield Babylon via The Awl] · That Grown Ups sequel you couldn’t wait to stab your eyes out rather than watch could soon be a reality. Sorry. [Showblitz] · The British Advertising Standards Authority has banned Final Destination 5’s cracked-skull-and-rebar poster on account of its perceived likelihood “to cause fear and undue distress to children.” Which would be totally reasonable if the kids didn’t already wake up every day in Britain. Is 'Shame' the 'Black Swan' of 2011?
Short reaction to that scintillating headline: No chance! However, these two films have an overabundance to keep than you might initially think -- and not since they both vary from same studio (Fox Searchlight). Ahead, five reasons the Steve McQueen-directed sex-addiction drama 'Shame' might be the 'Black Swan' in the 2011 gaggle. 1. Outstanding lead performances in not-so-outstanding movies As honours season drawn on within the finish of 2010 and into this year, the thrill on 'Black Swan' went from instant classic to camping classic. The Darren Aronofsky-directed film -- specially the cuckoo bananas third act -- was more arch and hysterical than most honours-bait, this despite a committed performance from Natalie Portman, who made an appearance to improve in regards to the fray although wallowing in 'Black Swan's' ridiculousness. 'Shame' isn't as silly as 'Black Swan' -- quite contrary, it's so ... damn ... serious -- but it's similarly problematic. As Brandon, the sex addicted NYer at 'Shame's' center, Michael Fassbender is completely brilliant, nevertheless the film somewhat enables him lower after some a lot of repetition together with a not-as-shocking-as-it-wants-to-be third act. There's a great just like 'Shame,' but it's a hard movie to love. 2. Same-sex make-out periods No less than part of the reason 'Black Swan' made $329 million worldwide? That hug between Natalie Portman and Mila Kunis! 'Shame' features a similarly bracing same-sex liplock (it's a spoiler, so you're going to get no more than that), though taking into consideration the participants as well as the film's NC-17 rating, it's doubtful that will help the conclusion. 3. NY City subways fresh from 'Warriors' Pet peeve time: NY City subways forget about appear like they did in 'The Gamers,' plastered with graffiti. Which is why movies like 'Shame' and 'Black Swan' (and television shows like '2 Broke Girls') so infuriating. When Brandon is riding the subway, of the question behind him is incorporated with scribble (see above). As someone who takes that train line virtually every day (it's the N and R line), I am in a position to attest it's not as untidy. This isn't 1981, 'Shame'! Seriously now. 4. Rising ingenues playing second-fiddle In 'Black Swan,' Mila Kunis never really can get an chance to shine with Portman consuming the spotlight in 'Shame,' Carey Mulligan is labored the same hands, though she includes one show-stopping moment: a downcast version of "NY, NY" that breaks Brandon's heart, and many likely yours too. 5. Addiction Clearly and many types of, but nevertheless: 'Shame' is all about sex addiction and the way it might eat away inside a person's soul. 'Black Swan' is about a dependancy perfectly, one compounded because Portman's Nina is certifiably crazy. (Still, nobody cuts their fingernails like Nina unless of course obviously they have a-rooted perfectionist issues.) Possibly she and Brandon can make a great couple -- whether or not this wasn't for the annoying mortal wound within the finish of 'Black Swan.' Doctors: George Michael Recovering In Vienna
First Published: November 30, 2011 11:37 AM EST Credit: Getty Images VIENNA, Austria -- Caption George Michael performs in London, August 25, 2008Doctors treating George Michael say the ex-front man for the pop group Wham! is making progress as he recovers from pneumonia. Doctors Gottfried Locker and Christoph Zielinski say the 48-year-old Michael remains hospitalized nonetheless. They say in a statement that he needed intensive care because of the seriousness and spread of the infection. The statement Wednesday says despite his progress, absolute rest and restraint are top priorities for Michael. It says the singer is receiving exactly the same treatment as any normal patient in Austria would for this ailment which appears to be an indirect denial of rumors that Michael could be suffering from even more serious problems. Keck's Exclusives: Hilarie Burton Gets the Keys to the Castle
Hilarie Burton Former One Tree Hill hottie Hilarie Burton is become reality star. Sort of. Hilarie, who left her One Tree role as Peyton in 2009 and currently costars on USA's White Collar, has won a guest spot on ABC's Castle as a charismatic reality TV personality named Kay Cappuccio, who to me sounds a lot like a certain Kardashian. ABC's description of the character notes Kay has "achieved significant fame and fortune without possessing any discernible skill or talent - she is famous mostly for being famous." Of course that could also apply to any number of Hiltons or Real Housewives populating our TVs.The character bio goes on to say, "Her outspoken attitude, good looks and knockout body have made her a favorite of tabloids and gossip websites the world over. Kay both relishes this spotlight and at the same time feels a prisoner of her own celebrity lifestyle - the result is a woman who is more complex than she might at first seem."More complex than she seems? Well, so much for my Kardashian comparisons. Sure, that was bitchy of me to say, but also fitting considering this episode's cheeky title: "An Embarrassment of Bitches."Subscribe to TV Guide Magazine now!

FEINBERG FORECAST: 'The Artist,' 'The Descendants,' 'The Help' Atop Best Pic Field
Fox Searchlight What follows is my latest assessment of all of the high-profile Oscar categories, along with commentary about what/who has positive and negative momentum at the moment in each of them. I welcome your thoughts in the comments section at the bottom of the post. BEST PICTURE Frontrunners The Artist (The Weinstein Company, 11/23, PG-13, trailer) The Descendants (Fox Searchlight, 11/23, R, trailer) The Help (Disney, 8/12, PG-13, trailer) Midnight in Paris (Sony Pictures Classics, 5/20, PG-13, trailer) Moneyball (Columbia, 9/23, PG-13, trailer) War Horse (Disney, 12/25, PG-13, trailer) Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close (Warner Bros., 12/25, PG-13, trailer) The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo (Sony, 12/21, R, trailer) J. Edgar (Warner Bros., 11/11, R, trailer) Margin Call (Roadside Attractions, 10/21, R, trailer) Major Threats The Ides of March (Sony, 10/14, R, trailer) Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy (Focus Features, 12/9, R, trailer) Hugo (Paramount, 11/23, PG, trailer) The Tree of Life (Fox Searchlight, 5/27, PG-13, trailer) Shame (Fox Searchlight, 12/2, NC-17, trailer) Beginners (Focus Features, 6/3, R, trailer) The Iron Lady (The Weinstein Company, 12/30, PG-13, teaser) Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows -- Part 2 (Warner Bros., 7/15, PG-13, trailer) Possibilities In the Land of Blood and Honey (FilmDistrict, 12/23, R, trailer) 50/50 (Summit, 9/30, R, trailer) My Week with Marilyn (The Weinstein Company, 11/23, R, trailer) Young Adult (Paramount, 12/9, R, trailer) Carnage (Sony Pictures Classics, 12/16, R, trailer) Super 8 (Paramount, 6/10, PG-13, trailer) Drive (FilmDistrict, 9/16, R, trailer) We Bought a Zoo (20th Century Fox, 12/23, PG, trailer) This timely little indie's gutsy day-and-date release plan has paid off in spades, with the film raking in considerable dough and becoming a hot topic of discussion amongst both industry insiders and the general public's intelligentsia. Nobody seems quite certain about what this film "is" -- an awards contender, purely commercial, or neither -- and the announcement that it will have a "nationwide commercial sneak" four weeks before its actual release is not reassuring news. BEST DIRECTOR Frontrunners Alexander Payne (The Descendants) Michel Hazanavicius (The Artist) Woody Allen (Midnight in Paris) Steven Spielberg (War Horse) Tate Taylor (The Help) Major Threats Stephen Daldry (Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close) David Fincher (The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo) Bennett Miller (Moneyball) Clint Eastwood (J. Edgar) Terrence Malick (The Tree of Life) Martin Scorsese (Hugo) George Clooney (The Ides of March) Possibilities Steve McQueen (Shame) J.C. Chandor (Margin Call) Tomas Alfredson (Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy) Phyllida Lloyd (The Iron Lady) Jason Reitman (Young Adult) Roman Polanski (Carnage) Nicolas Winding Refn (Drive) It took guts for this old-school filmmaker to experiment with a technique like 3-D for the first time in his career at the age of 69, but his efforts on this family film are being met with heaps of praise from the likes of 3-D pioneer James Cameron (read here) and Time magazine's Richard Corliss (read here). Fairly or not, the growing consensus seems to be that this is not one of his "major works" (think Unforgiven, Mystic River, and Million Dollar Baby), but rather the latest in a more recent string of films that have left a little more to be desired (Changeling, Gran Torino, Invictus, and Hereafter). BEST ACTOR Frontrunners Jean Dujardin (The Artist) George Clooney (The Descendants) Brad Pitt (Moneyball) Leonardo DiCaprio (J. Edgar) Michael Fassbender (Shame) Major Threats Ryan Gosling (The Ides of March) Gary Oldman (Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy) Michael Shannon (Take Shelter) Woody Harrelson (Rampart) Ryan Gosling (Drive) Joseph Gordon-Levitt (50/50) Paul Giamatti (Win Win) Possibilities Thomas Horn (Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close) Daniel Craig (The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo) Ralph Fiennes (Coriolanus) Demian Bichir (A Better Life) Owen Wilson (Midnight in Paris) Jeremy Irvine (War Horse) Zachary Quinto (Margin Call) Matt Damon (We Bought a Zoo) He's been beating the pavement as much as anyone this awards season, and -- even if his character in this film has turned off some female voters, who feel he's unapologetically misogynistic -- he himself is a hard guy not to like. Though virtually nobody who is not working on the film has seen the film yet, the buzz that I'm hearing is that it's the Rooney Mara show, and that if it scores any acting nod it will be one for her, not Craig. BEST ACTRESS Frontrunners Viola Davis (The Help) Meryl Streep (The Iron Lady) Michelle Williams (My Week with Marilyn) Glenn Close (Albert Nobbs) Rooney Mara (The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo) Major Threats Charlize Theron (Young Adult) Elizabeth Olsen (Martha Marcy May Marlene) Kirsten Dunst (Melancholia) Keira Knightley (A Dangerous Method) Tilda Swinton (We Need to Talk About Kevin) Michelle Yeoh (The Lady) Possibilities Mia Wasikowska (Jane Eyre) Ellen Barkin (Another Happy Day) Felicity Jones (Like Crazy) Adepero Oduye (Pariah) Rachel Weisz (The Whistleblower) Vera Farmiga (Higher Ground) This actress' incredible portrait of Margaret Thatcher as both a vibrant middle-aged and fading elderly woman has received enthusiastic acclaim from virtually everyone who has seen it since its unveiling last week, and is certain to bring her a record-extending 17th Oscar nod. The film and this performance -- easily the most memorable thing about it -- seem to be fading from the discussion as another psychological/sex-centric drama -- Shame, which also stars Michael Fassbender -- steps into the spotlight. BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR Frontrunners Christopher Plummer (Beginners) Max von Sydow (Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close) Albert Brooks (Drive) Jeremy Irons (Margin Call) Kevin Spacey (Margin Call) Major Threats Stanley Tucci (Margin Call) Jim Broadbent (The Iron Lady) Jonah Hill (Moneyball) Armie Hammer (J. Edgar) Kenneth Branagh (My Week with Marilyn) Patton Oswalt (Young Adult) Ben Kingsley (Hugo) NEW Tom Hanks (Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close) Possibilities Christoph Waltz (Carnage) John C. Reilly (Carnage) Nick Nolte (Warrior) John Hawkes (Martha Marcy May Marlene) Andy Serkis (Rise of the Planet of the Apes) Brad Pitt (The Tree of Life) Viggo Mortensen (A Dangerous Method) George Clooney (The Ides of March) Christopher Plummer (The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo) NEW Few expected the 27-year-old -- who has almost exclusively worked in frat-pack comedy prior to this venture (with Cyrus being the one notable exception) -- to hold his own as much as he did opposite Brad Pitt in this film, the awards campaign for which is currently being revived. This performance has yet to be seen by virtually anyone not working on the film, but is said to be incredibly brief -- almost a cameo, really -- and considerably overshadowed by veteran von Sydow's. BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS Frontrunners Octavia Spencer (The Help) Shailene Woodley (The Descendants) Berenice Bejo (The Artist) Jessica Chastain (The Help) Janet McTeer (Albert Nobbs) Major Threats Sandra Bullock (Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close) Melissa McCarthy (Bridesmaids) Vanessa Redgrave (Coriolanus) Carey Mulligan (Shame) Evan Rachel Wood (The Ides of March) Judy Greer (The Descendants) Jodie Foster (Carnage) Possibilities Kate Winslet (Carnage) Jessica Chastain (The Tree of Life) Marion Cotillard (Midnight in Paris) Elizabeth Reaser (Young Adult) NEW Emily Watson (War Horse) Kim Wayans (Pariah) Judi Dench (J. Edgar) Scarlett Johansson (We Bought a Zoo) Many a young actress has been recognized in this category, and this one checks off a lot of important boxes: she's pretty, charming, and humble (see her profile/pic in the new EW, not yet online) -- plus it never hurts to have George Clooney running around saying fantastic things about you. As strong of a perf as this is from a truly great actress, the film in which it is given -- which takes classic Shakespeare and sets it in the present day -- just is not everyone's cup of tea and is not lighting a fire in the bellies of even those for whom it is. BEST ADAPTED SCREENPLAY Frontrunners Alexander Payne, Nat Faxon, Jim Rash (The Descendants) Tate Taylor (The Help) Stan Chervin, Aaron Sorkin, Steven Zaillian (Moneyball) Richard Curtis, Lee Hall (War Horse) Eric Roth (Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close) Major Threats Steven Zaillian (The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo) George Clooney, Grant Heslov (The Ides of March) Bridget O'Connor, Peter Straughan (Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy) John Logan (Hugo) Hossein Amini (Drive) Possibilities Pedro Almodovar (The Skin I Live In) Roman Polanski (Carnage) Christopher Hampton (A Dangerous Method) Cameron Crowe, Aline Brosh McKenna (We Bought a Zoo) John Logan (Coriolanus) BEST ORIGINAL SCREENPLAY Frontrunners Michel Hazanavicius (The Artist) Woody Allen (Midnight in Paris) Dustin Lance Black (J. LUCAS AKOSKINProducer-thesp, ArgentinaLos Angeles-based Lucas Akoskin, 32, has been called the King of Shorts, a tag he doesn't like, since 2008 when he pioneered the innovative "Terra Shorts," a collection of independent stories woven together by the Latin American experience. His latest package, "The Heartbeat of the World," in collaboration with Guillermo Arriaga and Alex Garcia, comprises four features (each made up of 10 shorts) on religion, sex, politics and substance abuse. Emir Kusturica and Jose Padilha are also on board. BENJAMIN AVILAHelmer-scribe, ArgentinaAvila takes a fresh look at Argentina's Dirty War (1976 to 1983) in his fiction debut "Clandestine Childhood," about a 12-year-old boy living with resistance fighters, based on his memories of growing up. "There was a lot of happiness and love not just fear and panic," he says. "I wanted to capture the human side without a dramatic or political tone," the same approach he used for "Nietos (identidad y memorial)," a Dirty War survivors documentary. The approach fetched "Childhood" a Films in Progress kudos at San Sebastian.BRUNO BETTATIProducer/film exec, ChileBettati has worn several hats during his film career but, from next year, he'd like to focus on producing two to three pics annually, including documentaries. He's managed to make several pics despite myriad responsibilities. Bettati, 38, is director of the Valdivia Film Festival and prexy of Chile's Film and TV Producers Assn., APCT. His latest production, Cristian Jimenez's drama "Bonsai" wowed in Cannes' Un Certain Regard. Up next is dark comedy "El verano de los peces voladores." VINICIUS COIMBRAHelmer, BrazilAfter 12 years as a leading TV Globo telenovela helmer, Coimbra's first foray into filmmaking has been an instant hit. "Matraga," based on a short story by Brazilian author Guimaraes Rosa, swept the recent Rio de Janeiro Film Festival, Latin America's largest event, nabbing five kudos including the jury and audience awards. "My goal was to allow Rosa's story to reach the public through film," he says. Coimbra is developing a version of "Macbeth," set in present-day Sao Paulo.JULIAN GIRALDOProducer/RCN Cine g.m., ColombiaGiraldo spurned the law profession 10 years ago to pursue his lifetime ambition to make films. Since launching RCN Cine in 2004, Giraldo, 40, has exec produced more than 20 pics, docus and shorts. In 2008 he co-founded production service company Shoot Colombia with helmer-scribe Felipe Aljure. Seeking a global interface for Colombian pics has led him to develop such projects as Screen Gems' "Operation Checkmate" with Greg Shapiro ("The Hurt Locker") co-producing, and Simon Brand's found-footage English-lingo drama "Default."JUAN DE DIOS LARRAINProducer, Chile"Tennis pros play different surfaces, so should producers," says Fabula founder Larrain. Larrain is an increasingly versatile force in Latin American fiction.PAULA MARKOVITCHHelmer-scribe, MexicoHer first outing as a helmer, "The Prize," proved very aptly named, topping the Guadalajara and Morelia fests and taking two artistic Berlin Silver Bears. Arguably Mexico's best film this year, the debut features a young girl and her mother hiding from Argentina's dictatorship in a gloomy seaside shanty. Clearly adept in drawing from her past, Markovitch is seeking funding for her second feature inspired by her father -- a visual artist and teacher.MATIAS MEYERHelmer-scribe, MexicoAn alumnus of the Sorbonne and Mexico's CCC film school (as was Markovitch), Meyer is clearly an art for art's sake type of filmmaker. "I am kind of a rebel, I go slowly, I film at the speed of the world," he says. "In the theater, I want there to be a moment of reflexion of internal spirituality." In "The Last Cristeros," Meyer transforms the wandering style used in previous works into a narrative advantage that bears following. MARCOS PRADOProducer-director, Brazil"Artificial Paradise," a love story set in the milieu of rave and synthetic drugs, is the fiction feature debut of Prado, who helmed "Estamira," a multi-prized social commentary docu. 'Twilight' manages global buzz
When "Twilight" franchise fans are involved, a world premiere is more than just a red carpet and stars. It's a chance for promoters to build global buzz. Summit Entertainment and event producer Chad Hudson took over the plaza at L.A. Live in downtown Los Angeles the weekend before the Nov. 14, premiere. They expected fans to camp out ahead of time -- but not the more than 1,100 who pitched tents and sleeping bags. Hudson took the deluge in stride: "We knew the campers were coming, and we embraced them," he says. An urban campground had been built on the L.A. Live Plaza and adjacent street, and a weekend of activities had been planned, from outdoor screenings of earlier "Twilight" pics, and perfs by soundtrack artists. Campers received free breakfasts and snacks, and free autographed "Twilight" books (five had premiere tickets hidden inside for lucky fans). On the morning of the premiere, the Twihards were given wristbands so they could populate the outsized red carpet and stadium-sized bleachers, and fill the Nokia Theater balcony inside. Yahoo Movies partnered with Summit and Hudson in the weekend-long promotion, synchronizing all aspects of the preem and events leading up to it. Yahoo sponsored a "Twilight" premiere contest, which more than 100,000 fans entered via a dedicated Facebook page, and logged more than 265,000 Facebook interactions via the site. Yahoo also carried a live stream of the red carpet action. "We're bridging the gap between awareness, excitement and action, driving activity that fans can share with friends," explains Yahoo vice president of entertainment Sibyl Goldman. Exclusive content was created at the preem, now packaged as clips on the website, further raising awareness aimed at generating online ticket sales for the movie. Yahoo provided free wi-fi to the campers, who further expanded the "Twilight" hype via social networks and other Internet tools. With the tent city drawing extensive media coverage, it provided an excellent buzz flashpoint for the film. As a cross-platform, multimedia event, the previous "Twilight: Eclipse" premiere created more than 3 million media impressions. "Breaking Dawn" should exceed that, says Hudson, although final numbers were not available. Still, it's the kind of promotion that's not likely to be duplicated -- at least until next November at L.A. Live, when the fifth "Twilight" installment is skedded to premiere. n Contact the Variety newsroom at news@variety.com

Public Enemy's Chuck D sues UMG
BY CHRISTOPHER MORRIS Rap act Public Enemy's frontman Chuck D has added his name to a chorus of Universal Music Group artists who have sued the company for underpayment of digital royalties. In a related matter, a federal judge has denied UMG's motion to dismiss the earlier actions filed by Rob Zombie and Rick James' estate. Chuck D (real name Carlton Douglas Ridenhour) filed his own class action against UMG in U.S. District Court in Northern California on Wednesday. The action alleges "UMG's accounting practiceshave allowed UMG to illegally withhold a substantial amount of money it receives from digital content providers" for the sale of digital downloads and master ringtones. According to the action, UMG acquired rights to Public Enemy's 1987-98 recordings when it acquired Def Jam, the rap act's label, in 1998. The suit claims "UMG is paying plaintiff and other class members roughly 25% of the royalties that it should be paying them for moneys received from music download providers." It alleges that on 1,000 digital singles downloaded at 99 cents apiece, artists are entitled to $315.85, versus $80.33 owed according to UMG's calculations. For 1,000 ringtones sold at $3 apiece, the suit claims artists are owed $660, versus $49.89 owed according to UMG's methodology. Chuck D's action cites last year's appellate court decision in F.B.T. Productions' suit against UMG and Aftermath Records, which found that F.B.T., which produced Eminem's earliest recordings, was entitled to higher digital royalties based on rates for masters licensed to third parties (Daily Variety, Sept. 7, 2010). That decision also inspired class actions filed in federal court in Northern California earlier this year by the James estate (Daily Variety, April 5) and Zombie, his band White Zombie, Whitesnake and Dave Mason (Daily Variety, May 24). On Monday, U.S. District Court Judge Susan Illston denied UMG's motion to dismiss the case based on a reading of Zombie's and James' contracts specifying the proper venue for legal action. Illston also denied UMG's motion to transfer the case from the court's Northern District to its Central District. Chuck D's action now brings the number of pending royalties cases against UMG to three. James Pizzirusso, an attorney at Hausfeld LLP in Washington, D.C., which is representing the rapper, told Daily Variety, "I can see the cases will eventually be consolidated." Kevin Smith's 'Hit Somebody' Is 'About So Much More' Than Hockey
Kevin Smith might have been calling "Hit Somebody" his "hockey movie," but when he chatted with MTV News recently, he was quick to clarify that it's much more than just that. "Now I understand some people are like, 'Dude, one hockey movie is a tough sell. Two?' I call it a hockey movie in the same way I've been calling 'Red State' a horror movie, and then people see 'Red State' and are like, 'That's not a horror movie.' Well, I don't know what else to call it," he explained. "Trust me though, it ain't a hockey movie. It's about so much more." It at least had a big enough story that he felt he needed to split what was to be his last movie as a director into his last two movies as a director. Earlier this year it was revealed that Smith was going to split "Hit Somebody" into two movies. He explained that, since it's his last movie, he wants to make sure it's done right. And if that means he'll make it in two movies, then so be it. "It just got big. And in a world where I was like, 'This is my last one, I'm going to go out on my terms,'" Smith said. "I was trying to figure out how to reduce the screenplay and shrink it but then I was like, f--k that, that's not going to do good service to the characters, to the story, to what I want to do. So I said, you know what, it's the last one, keep writing. If it becomes two, it becomes two." Smith plans on releasing the "Hit Somebody" screenplay early to the public so people can see the type of movie he's planning on. He's already talked to some of his regulars, including "Red State's" John Goodman and Kevin Pollack, about coming on board the film, and it even recently cast Michael Angarano as a Russian hockey player. After he's finished the script, Smith said he also plans on shooting Ben Affleck and Matt Damon a call to see if they'd be interested in participating in his final film as well. Will Vdio Give Netflix A Run Because Of Its Money?
Netflix might have another rival within the video subscription business — the lately released Vdio, the creation of the cofounder of Skype, Janus Friis. Very little is famous about Vdio, according to what tech and gadget site Giga-Om revealed Tuesday, but that publish’s figure of 200 active monthly customers on Facebook had grown to three,000 whenever we checked several hrs later. As well as the Facebook application needed for access can be obtained only within the U.K. A minimum of that’s what we should were advised whenever we attempted to register. On the other hand, it works out U.K. customers are told that Vdio is “coming soon.” The Giga-Om publish describes in your mind-mind-numbing detail the internet detective arrange it required to determine who’s behind Vdio. Because it presently is available, Vdio’s website includes a primary page that has an alternating display of images from high-profile Television shows for example Mad Males, Breaking Bad and also the Tudors and films such as the Dark Dark night. The detective work brought eventually to some stealthy entity known as Project WBS, which based on an SEC filing elevated some $5.six million last year, and it is company directors include numerous longtime tech pals and financial advisors of Friis and the Skype cofounder Niklas Zennstrom. You will find also folks “who labored for TV Guide, NBC and also the music subscription version of Napster, along with the former leader of Skypes visual design team, somebody that did content acquisition for Netflix” — along with a systems engineer who labored at NASAs Jet Space Laboratory and it is familiar with data management and modeling, data statistics, and record analyses of huge data sets, including data mining, visualization, and interpretation. Most people are situated in La. When Vdio will formally launch and just how it'll work are unclear, however it probably be subscription-based, which appears to put Netflix squarely in Vdio’s crosshairs. It appears real, also it looks serious. The films and Television shows shown on Vdio originate from Warner Bros., AMC, Showtime, The new sony and Fox. Netflix continues to be lurching in crisis mode since its botched bid to split up its DVD and streaming companies, and Hulus future remains uncertain. Vdio might not have was an opportunity six several weeks ago, however it could have a genuine strategic window.
Viacom, Google Face Off in Appeals Court Over YouTube Copyright Issues
Viacom, Google, and a class of copyright holders led by the UK Premier League squared off Tuesday before a three-judge panel at the 2nd Circuit Court of Appeals in a case that will shape the future of the Internet by determining the standard for copyright liability. The parties not only presented distinct world-views of their interpretation of relevant statutory language, but debated "knowledge" almost as if one side was reading from Plato and the other from Ludwig Wittgenstein. The gulf between the two camps is that enormous. Up first was Paul Smith, chair of the appellate practice at Jenner & Block, arguing on Viacom's behalf that YouTube willfully blinded itself to more than 60,000 copyrighted works like clips from The Daily Show with Jon Stewart and BET content illegitimately posted on the video-sharing website. PHOTOS: Hollywood's Biggest Blunders In opening remarks, Smith called a decision by U.S. District Court Louis Stanton to dismiss Viacom's billion-dollar lawsuit against YouTube "indefensible." If left to stand, Smith argued that it would nullify three statutory obligations by ISPs like YouTube:First, to act expeditiously if a company gains knowledge of copyrighted material on its network. Second, there would be no preventing online companies from deriving direct financial benefit off the back of copyrighted material. And third, there would be no stopping sites like YouTube from storing infringing materials at the behest of their users. During questioning from the appellate judges, Smith got some push-back on whether Viacom was merely asserting YouTube had "abstract" knowledge of copyright infringing material. The judges wanted to know whether this would be enough to satisfy its burdens in pushing the case. Viacom has long argued that general knowledge of infringement is as good as actual knowledge in forcing ISPs to act expeditiously, but here Smith largely eschewed direct talk about "red flags." Instead, he (as well as the lawyer representing the class plaintiffs) approached the issue more practically, hitting hard on the point that the e-mails and other documented evidence from the case showed that whatever standard of knowledge was picked, it was more than sufficient to bring the case before a jury. "The founders of YouTube were one of the 10 most frequent users of the website," said Smith, adding, "They deliberately hid from their own eyes what was going on." 'Jesus Christ Superstar' Musical is Broadway-Bound
NEW YORK (AP) What's the buzz? A hit production of "Jesus Christ Superstar" in Canada is coming south to Broadway.Producers announced Tuesday that the rock musical about the last days of Jesus written by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice will hit NY in the spring, a move that was widely expected.Previews will begin on March 1 at the Neil Simon Theatre and an official opening is set for March 22. Des McAnuff, the artistic director of the Stratford Shakespeare Festival in Ontario, where the revival originated this summer, will again direct."I'm extremely happy, and very, very happy for the company of actors because I think they anticipated that this might happen and I certainly haven't discouraged them from believing that," McAnuff said by phone from Italy. The guitar- and keyboard-driven musical, which debuted on Broadway in 1971, includes such songs as "What's the Buzz?" ''Superstar" and "I Don't Know How to Love Him." The original production earned five Tony Award nominations, including one for Ben Vereen, who played Judas. A film version was released in 1973.The musical dramatizes Jesus' entry into Jerusalem, the unrest caused by his preaching and popularity, his betrayal by Judas, the trial before Pontius Pilate and his ultimate crucifixion. It marked an early collaboration between Lloyd Webber and Rice, who would go on to create "Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat" and "Evita," which is coming to Broadway in the spring of 2012."Superstar" was first introduced as an album before being staged on Broadway and McAnuff says his production is very faithful to the original recording. "We've treated it more like an opera than a musical," he said. The new production also teases out the story's love triangle. The latest stage production opened at the Canadian festival in June and ends its run there on Nov. 6 before moving to the La Jolla Playhouse in La Jolla, Calif., for final tweaking from Nov. 18 to Dec. 31 before its Broadway run.A number of other productions put on at the Stratford Festival have found their way to Broadway, including 2002's "King Lear" with Christopher Plummer and the 2009 production of "The Importance of Being Earnest," starring and directed by Brian Bedford.Though no casting was announced for Broadway, McAnuff anticipates keeping together most of the cast he originally molded, including Chilina Kennedy as Mary Magdalene, Paul Nolan as Jesus, Josh Young as Judas Iscariot, Bruce Dow as King Herod, and Brent Carver as Pontius Pilate.Producers hope "Jesus Christ Superstar" will find a receptive Broadway audience that has already seen revivals of such 1970s-era shows as "Hair" and "Godspell," which starts performances later this month. It also taps into the religious-themed musicals that have settled on Broadway "Sister Act" and "The Book of Mormon.""I think there is that great expression, 'There's something in the air.' I suppose that's what it is," said McAnuff, who was a teenager when he first saw "Hair" in Toronto. "That kind of anarchic process that went into creating albums and shows in those days is perhaps taking on a kind of new respect."Copyright 2011 Associated Press. All rights reserved. The Sons of Tennessee Williams
An Initial Run Features discharge of a Wolffhouse Presents production. Created, directed by Tim Wolff. With: George Roth, Don Stratton, Jimmy Keyes, Mike Moreau, John Henry Bogie, Albert Carey, Tracy Hendrix, Steve Labranche, Freddie Guess, Bill Woolley, George Patterson, Bill McLemore, Gary p Leaumont, Bill McCarthy, Don Stratton, Abram Bowie, Wendell Stipelcovich."The Sons of Tennessee Williams" stories "circus clubs," or "krewes," which for several years symbolized the only real public face of homosexuality in New Orleans and, for an extent, the South generally. Tim Wolff's documentary is really a directing mixture of colorful interviewees and footage in one such krewe's 40th anniversary ball, however it does not probe very deep, getting relatively scant political content or narrative shape. Pic opens March. 7 in Gotham and March. 14 in La, signaling modest theatrical visibility before home-format existence. Pic's early description of their subjects as "pioneers from the earliest gay civil privileges within the U.S." is a little dubious. Up north, the Mattachine Society was agitating for gay privileges nearly ten years prior to the first, shortlived gay krewe was created like a parody of straight krewes' Carnival pageantry. This happened not lengthy after three Tulane U. students were found innocent of murder for "moving a queer" his or her fraternity initiation in 1959, a period when police raids on "deviant" institutions were common, what they are called of individuals arrested were released from our newspaper, and parents typically cautioned their youthful from that infamous vice living room, in france they Quarter. Once the names from the gay krewe's people were printed, the audience quickly folded. But other clubs progressively sprang up, like the Krewe of Armeinius (whose 40th ball occupies much screentime), which released in 1968. Interviewees recall individuals early many their very own formative ones towards the accompaniment of archival photos and footage. Recollections step forward to briefly discuss the city devastation wrought by Helps and much more lately by Hurricane Katrina. Glimpses of formulations for that Armeinius ball, as well as their climactic onstage result, reveal spectacular, break-the-bank costumes of just as much architectural as sartorial interest. Regardless of the fanciful representations of the gingerbread guy and elephant-headed Hindu deity Ganesh, most favor drag glamour over drag camping. Be it an item from the city's laid-back, party-hearty character or perhaps a fault from the filmmaking, "Sons" creates a enjoyable sit but does not genuinely have the substance to provide the targeted-for tenor of inspiring struggle. Interviewees are extremely many and too briefly been told by for audiences to obtain very involved with their tales, and also at the finish, the pic simply peters out, never getting a strong narrative thread or editorial technique to lift it beyond as being a glorified scrapbook. Within the annals of contemporary American gay history, the docu does not create a situation with this particular geographic/cultural nexus rating greater than a footnote, though in various hands it could have felt more substantial. Packaging is sufficient, the soundtrack choice of golden oldies an advantage.Digital camera (color, HD), Eric Adkins editors, Wolff, Matt Bucy music, Ratty Scurvics seem, Carl Moller second unit camera, Bucy. Netflix, Hulu, Others Ink Deals That Will Fold Entertainment Into Facebook
Facebook’s latest update has large implications for entertainment. In the organization’sdeveloper conference f8 today, Boss Mark Zuckerberg revealed the bigger reason behind the web site’s recently revealed “ticker” feature additionally to some completely new one referred to as Timeline, and introduced a slew of content deals that will enable clients to latch to the tv shows, movies and music their pals are experiencing. The “open graph” media programs — which will includeHulu, Netflix, Spotify and IMDb –will allow clients to make a window within the ticker or Timeline to check out TV and movie content, or give consideration to tunes their pals have just required directly into. However, as Netflix can’t seem to trap a relaxation lately, you will discover complications: The business’s embattled Boss, Reed Hastings, also needed happens at f8 to go over the Netflix integration and mentioned that current U.S. law prevents Netflix clients from connecting in the intend to their Facebook account. Clients in many the business’s the areas hold the go-ahead, though. The Netflix blog released a plea due to its U.S. clients to request Congress to reverse a law that “creates some confusion over our capacity to allow U.S. people instantly share the television films and shows they watch utilizing their pals on Facebook.” While Facebook edges into entertainment portal territory, some clients are crying foul within the capabilities — many have expressed irritation within the ticker for the — and likening the renovated site for the one it usurped in social networking: Bebo. For Zuckerberg, the modifications are about connection and discovery.”We’re will reach assist you to interact with anything, the way you want,” he told the conference. Before Zuckerberg needed happens for his keynote, SNL‘s Andy Samberg folded out his impersonation in the Facebook founder:
Breakfast at Tiffany's at 50: We Need to Talk About Mr. Yunioshi
As delightful as it is to watch Audrey Hepburn flitting about NY in Breakfast at Tiffany’s, gazing adoringly at jewels and pretty things and falling in love as party girl Holly Golightly — the original Carrie Bradshaw — a shadow has loomed over that film for decades: Namely, Mickey Rooney’s cartoonish turn as Mr. Yunioshi, the buck-toothed, bespectacled and slightly pervy Japanese man who lives upstairs. The good news, circa 2011, is that after years of not knowing exactly how to address that ugly, embarrassing moment in classic Hollywood cinema — hindsight and all that — Paramount Pictures, releasing the 50th Anniversary Blu-ray this week, offers a concerted effort to make amends. It may seem like a small part of the slick and comprehensive new Blu-ray release of Blake Edwards’ 1961 classic, which comes packed with loads of commemorative special features celebrating Hepburn and the beloved film, but the 17-minute documentaryMr. Yunioshi: An Asian Perspective, released previously on the film’s 2009 DVD re-issue, is the single most important. Honestly, you can forget the daydream loveliness of “Moon River” and the escapist fabulousness of Holly Golightly’s very existence. No part of the film speaks louder about American life at the time (and what fantasies real Americans received at the movies) than Mr. Yunioshi. As played by Rooney, Mr. Yunioshi is shocking to behold. To say the character and performance don’t hold up today is an understatement; at the time the caricature may have been accepted and written off as merely colorful comedic slapstick, but many decades of social progression later, it’s clearly downright racist. “Miss Go-right-ry!” Rooney calls to Hepburn, affecting an outlandishly extreme “Asian” accent. With his gnarly prosthetic teeth, slicked back hair, Coke-bottle glasses and squinty eyes, he’s an uncanny personification of WWII-era anti-Japanese propaganda cartoons. He’s skeevy to boot; the film mines laughs out of his features, accent and behavior, not to mention Holly’s efforts to shrug off Yunioshi’s efforts to get her upstairs into his apartment for a private photography session. It may have been just another blip in a long history of movies featuring insulting ethnic stereotypes, but in the middle of an otherwise lovely film it became one of the more cutting examples of institutionalized racism in Hollywood. “It just made me cringe,” says actress Marilyn Tokuda, one of a handful of film and media pros interviewed in the documentary. You don’t have to be Asian or Asian-American to feel that cringe when watching Rooney in the film, or to notice the striking lack of Asians in mainstream media, let alone movies. But it’s not solely a matter of being woefully mis- or under-represented. Phil Lee and Guy Aoki of the Media Action Network for Asian Americans, who also appear in the feature, patiently and painstakingly explain what “yellowface” is for those who don’t know, detailing how characters like Mr. Yunioshi (or Ming the Merciless, Mr. Moto, Lon Chaney in Shadows, or even Nancy Kwan in The World of Suzie Wong) reflect and perpetuate negative stereotypes that can seep off-screen into the public consciousness. When American audiences of the 1930s, 1940s and beyond are only exposed to evil Asian villains who are untrustworthy, for example, can you draw a correlation to the U.S. government then justifying the internment of Japanese-Americans on the basis that they can’t be trusted? That’s not to say that racism in movies causes racist behavior. The former perpetuates the latter, and for better and for worse Breakfast at Tiffany’s is a product of its time. Did filmmakers back then intend to offend? Probably not. Is their ignorance excusable nonetheless? I’d say no. We’ve made strides as a people, an industry and an audience to avoid lapses in judgment this damning, and we’ve seen the likes of Justin Lin, Jon M. Chu and Maggie Q proliferate in front of and behind the camera in recent years, helping to reverse the historic trend by normalizing the Asian-American presence in Hollywood with mainstream successes. Still, minority voices are in relatively short supply. So it’s worth remembering, as we soak in the blithe cheeriness of Holly Golightly and celebrate the 50th anniversary of her romantic escapades, exactly why her Japanese neighbor upstairs is so worthy of (not so) polite disdain.

9/11 Anniversary: How the Music Industry Was Impacted
Like nearly all forms of entertainment, the music industry both felt the impact of the 9/11 terrorist attacks and made its own.our editor recommendsSeptember 11 News Coverage Collected in Internet ArchiveCyndi Lauper Flubs National Anthem at 9/11 U.S. Open Semi-Finals (Video) September 11, 2001 was a Tuesday, the day when music stores typically receive new releases, and several big titles were on deck, includingJay-Z'sThe Blueprint. The week after the terrorist attacks, music sales dropped 5%, while the New York metropolitan area suffered a 16.2% decline, according to Nielsen SoundScan (worth noting: six weeks earlier, N Sync's Celebrityalbum sold a staggering 1.8 million units its first week out). But soon thereafter, music would play an important role in the process of grieving and healing and the eventual return to normalcy. As the world remembers the events of a decade ago, The Hollywood Reporterruns down how the music community was affected and how it reacted. • More than 165 songs are banned: In a memorandum sent to hundreds of Clear Channel-operated stations, more than 165 songs were listed as "lyrically questionable." At first, the radio conglomerate denied the existence of such a list, but after industry insider site Hits Daily Double published it, a clarification was made: that the songs were more of a suggestion than an outright ban. Among the songs on the reported list: AC/DC's "Dirty Deeds Done Cheap" and "Highway to Hell," Alien Ant Farm's cover of Smooth Criminal, Neil Diamond's "America," Bob Dylan's "Knockin' on Heaven's Door," Foo Fighters "Learn to Fly," Billy Joel's "Only the Good Die Young," Judas Priest's "Some Heads are Gonna Roll," Dave Matthews Band's "Crash Into Me," Queen's "Another one Bites the Dust," R.E.M.'s "It's the End of the World As We Know It," and Drowning Pool's "Bodies." The Beatles "A Day in the Life," "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds," "Ob-la-di, Ob-la-da," and "Ticket to Ride" were also temporarily deemed to be in poor taste. STORY:9/11 TV: 5 Specials Worth Watching • The Strokes, Dave Matthews remove sensitive tracks from their albums: RCA Records was home to The Strokes and Dave Mathews Band, both artists who took it upon themselves to remove songs with sensitive subject matter, in light of the recent tragedies. For The Strokes, it was the track "New York City Cops" off of their debut album Is This It, which repeated the chorus, "New York City cops / They ain't too smart." For Matthews, it was "When the World Ends" from the album Everyday. • Tours are postponed and benefit concerts organized: Terrorism fears caused many tours to cancel or postpone shows, including U2, Madonna, Aerosmith, Britney Spears and Janet Jackson, who later called off the entire European leg of her All For You trek citing safety issues. The Latin Grammy Awards, scheduled for the evening of Sept. 11, and annual music conference CMJ Music Festival, which was due to kick off on Sept. 13, also had to be rescheduled. But the music community soon banded together to help victims of the attacks, participating in the September 21 telethon America: A Tribute to Heroes, which raised $150 million for United Way and featured performances by Bruce Springsteen, Stevie Wonder, U2, Faith Hill, Wyclef Jean, Alicia Keys, Bon Jovi and Dixie Chicks. A month later on October 20, Jay-Z, Paul McCartney, Elton John, Billy Joel, David Bowie, Destiny's Child and others took the stage at Madison Square Garden for a star-studded benefit concert. In the crowd were surviving members of the New York police and fire departments and other emergency services and families of those killed in the attacks. STORY:9/11 Anniversary: The Touching Story Behind Showtime's New Paul McCartney Documentary In December, a compilation of performances from The Concert for New York City was released with proceeds from the two-CD set going to the Robin Hood Relief Fund, which helped lower-income New Yorkers and families of rescue workers affected by the terrorist attacks. See a clip below. • Songs are inspired by 9/11: Albums by Jay-Z (The Blueprint), Bob Dylan (Love and Theft) and Mariah Carey (Glitter) were all scheduled for release on that day, but they would not be the soundtrack to September 11. Rather, songs like Springsteen's "The Rising," released the following July, and Alan Jackson's "Where Were You (When the World Stopped Turning)," recorded two months after the attacks, were born, providing renewed hope for healing. An all-star version of Marvin Gaye's classic "What's Going On" featuring Bono, Christina Aguilera, Jennifer Lopez and Gwen Stefanialso came together, but perhaps most poignant were previously released songs that took on new meaning -- like Five For Fighting's 2000 hit "Superman" and Enrique Iglesias' "Hero," which arrived at stores on September 3, 2001. STORY:Fox, NBC and HBO Will Not Air 9/11 Specials on Sunday • The music business suffers its share of casualties: On September 11, Backstreet Boys set carpenter Daniel John Lee was on American Airlines flight 11, headed from Boston to Los Angeles, where his wife was due to give birth. Former Walt Disney consumer products svp Carolyn Beug was also on that plane, which would hit the North Tower. Jane Simpkin, a member of ASCAP's Northeast music licensing team, was a passenger on the plane that hit the South Tower, while Matthew O'Mahony, the husband of then-Island Def Jam svp of publicity Lauren Murphy and a trader at Cantor Fitzgerald, was in the North Tower, as was Michael Andrews, the brother of then-Billboard circulation director Jeanne Jamin. By the end of September 2001, the music industry had collected more than $170 million to aid families of 9/11 victims.
