Doctors: George Michael Recovering In Vienna

First Published: November 30, 2011 11:37 AM EST Credit: Getty Images VIENNA, Austria -- Caption George Michael performs in London, August 25, 2008Doctors treating George Michael say the ex-front man for the pop group Wham! is making progress as he recovers from pneumonia. Doctors Gottfried Locker and Christoph Zielinski say the 48-year-old Michael remains hospitalized nonetheless. They say in a statement that he needed intensive care because of the seriousness and spread of the infection. The statement Wednesday says despite his progress, absolute rest and restraint are top priorities for Michael. It says the singer is receiving exactly the same treatment as any normal patient in Austria would for this ailment which appears to be an indirect denial of rumors that Michael could be suffering from even more serious problems. Michael was admitted to Viennas AKH hospital last week after canceling a performance in the Austrian capital. Copyright 2011 by The Associated Press. All rights reserved. Keck's Exclusives: Hilarie Burton Gets the Keys to the Castle

Hilarie Burton Former One Tree Hill hottie Hilarie Burton is become reality star. Sort of. Hilarie, who left her One Tree role as Peyton in 2009 and currently costars on USA's White Collar, has won a guest spot on ABC's Castle as a charismatic reality TV personality named Kay Cappuccio, who to me sounds a lot like a certain Kardashian. ABC's description of the character notes Kay has "achieved significant fame and fortune without possessing any discernible skill or talent - she is famous mostly for being famous." Of course that could also apply to any number of Hiltons or Real Housewives populating our TVs.The character bio goes on to say, "Her outspoken attitude, good looks and knockout body have made her a favorite of tabloids and gossip websites the world over. Kay both relishes this spotlight and at the same time feels a prisoner of her own celebrity lifestyle - the result is a woman who is more complex than she might at first seem."More complex than she seems? Well, so much for my Kardashian comparisons. Sure, that was bitchy of me to say, but also fitting considering this episode's cheeky title: "An Embarrassment of Bitches."Subscribe to TV Guide Magazine now!

FEINBERG FORECAST: 'The Artist,' 'The Descendants,' 'The Help' Atop Best Pic Field

Fox Searchlight What follows is my latest assessment of all of the high-profile Oscar categories, along with commentary about what/who has positive and negative momentum at the moment in each of them. I welcome your thoughts in the comments section at the bottom of the post. BEST PICTURE Frontrunners The Artist (The Weinstein Company, 11/23, PG-13, trailer) The Descendants (Fox Searchlight, 11/23, R, trailer) The Help (Disney, 8/12, PG-13, trailer) Midnight in Paris (Sony Pictures Classics, 5/20, PG-13, trailer) Moneyball (Columbia, 9/23, PG-13, trailer) War Horse (Disney, 12/25, PG-13, trailer) Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close (Warner Bros., 12/25, PG-13, trailer) The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo (Sony, 12/21, R, trailer) J. Edgar (Warner Bros., 11/11, R, trailer) Margin Call (Roadside Attractions, 10/21, R, trailer) Major Threats The Ides of March (Sony, 10/14, R, trailer) Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy (Focus Features, 12/9, R, trailer) Hugo (Paramount, 11/23, PG, trailer) The Tree of Life (Fox Searchlight, 5/27, PG-13, trailer) Shame (Fox Searchlight, 12/2, NC-17, trailer) Beginners (Focus Features, 6/3, R, trailer) The Iron Lady (The Weinstein Company, 12/30, PG-13, teaser) Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows -- Part 2 (Warner Bros., 7/15, PG-13, trailer) Possibilities In the Land of Blood and Honey (FilmDistrict, 12/23, R, trailer) 50/50 (Summit, 9/30, R, trailer) My Week with Marilyn (The Weinstein Company, 11/23, R, trailer) Young Adult (Paramount, 12/9, R, trailer) Carnage (Sony Pictures Classics, 12/16, R, trailer) Super 8 (Paramount, 6/10, PG-13, trailer) Drive (FilmDistrict, 9/16, R, trailer) We Bought a Zoo (20th Century Fox, 12/23, PG, trailer) This timely little indie's gutsy day-and-date release plan has paid off in spades, with the film raking in considerable dough and becoming a hot topic of discussion amongst both industry insiders and the general public's intelligentsia. Nobody seems quite certain about what this film "is" -- an awards contender, purely commercial, or neither -- and the announcement that it will have a "nationwide commercial sneak" four weeks before its actual release is not reassuring news. BEST DIRECTOR Frontrunners Alexander Payne (The Descendants) Michel Hazanavicius (The Artist) Woody Allen (Midnight in Paris) Steven Spielberg (War Horse) Tate Taylor (The Help) Major Threats Stephen Daldry (Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close) David Fincher (The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo) Bennett Miller (Moneyball) Clint Eastwood (J. Edgar) Terrence Malick (The Tree of Life) Martin Scorsese (Hugo) George Clooney (The Ides of March) Possibilities Steve McQueen (Shame) J.C. Chandor (Margin Call) Tomas Alfredson (Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy) Phyllida Lloyd (The Iron Lady) Jason Reitman (Young Adult) Roman Polanski (Carnage) Nicolas Winding Refn (Drive) It took guts for this old-school filmmaker to experiment with a technique like 3-D for the first time in his career at the age of 69, but his efforts on this family film are being met with heaps of praise from the likes of 3-D pioneer James Cameron (read here) and Time magazine's Richard Corliss (read here). Fairly or not, the growing consensus seems to be that this is not one of his "major works" (think Unforgiven, Mystic River, and Million Dollar Baby), but rather the latest in a more recent string of films that have left a little more to be desired (Changeling, Gran Torino, Invictus, and Hereafter). BEST ACTOR Frontrunners Jean Dujardin (The Artist) George Clooney (The Descendants) Brad Pitt (Moneyball) Leonardo DiCaprio (J. Edgar) Michael Fassbender (Shame) Major Threats Ryan Gosling (The Ides of March) Gary Oldman (Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy) Michael Shannon (Take Shelter) Woody Harrelson (Rampart) Ryan Gosling (Drive) Joseph Gordon-Levitt (50/50) Paul Giamatti (Win Win) Possibilities Thomas Horn (Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close) Daniel Craig (The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo) Ralph Fiennes (Coriolanus) Demian Bichir (A Better Life) Owen Wilson (Midnight in Paris) Jeremy Irvine (War Horse) Zachary Quinto (Margin Call) Matt Damon (We Bought a Zoo) He's been beating the pavement as much as anyone this awards season, and -- even if his character in this film has turned off some female voters, who feel he's unapologetically misogynistic -- he himself is a hard guy not to like. Though virtually nobody who is not working on the film has seen the film yet, the buzz that I'm hearing is that it's the Rooney Mara show, and that if it scores any acting nod it will be one for her, not Craig. BEST ACTRESS Frontrunners Viola Davis (The Help) Meryl Streep (The Iron Lady) Michelle Williams (My Week with Marilyn) Glenn Close (Albert Nobbs) Rooney Mara (The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo) Major Threats Charlize Theron (Young Adult) Elizabeth Olsen (Martha Marcy May Marlene) Kirsten Dunst (Melancholia) Keira Knightley (A Dangerous Method) Tilda Swinton (We Need to Talk About Kevin) Michelle Yeoh (The Lady) Possibilities Mia Wasikowska (Jane Eyre) Ellen Barkin (Another Happy Day) Felicity Jones (Like Crazy) Adepero Oduye (Pariah) Rachel Weisz (The Whistleblower) Vera Farmiga (Higher Ground) This actress' incredible portrait of Margaret Thatcher as both a vibrant middle-aged and fading elderly woman has received enthusiastic acclaim from virtually everyone who has seen it since its unveiling last week, and is certain to bring her a record-extending 17th Oscar nod. The film and this performance -- easily the most memorable thing about it -- seem to be fading from the discussion as another psychological/sex-centric drama -- Shame, which also stars Michael Fassbender -- steps into the spotlight. BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR Frontrunners Christopher Plummer (Beginners) Max von Sydow (Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close) Albert Brooks (Drive) Jeremy Irons (Margin Call) Kevin Spacey (Margin Call) Major Threats Stanley Tucci (Margin Call) Jim Broadbent (The Iron Lady) Jonah Hill (Moneyball) Armie Hammer (J. Edgar) Kenneth Branagh (My Week with Marilyn) Patton Oswalt (Young Adult) Ben Kingsley (Hugo) NEW Tom Hanks (Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close) Possibilities Christoph Waltz (Carnage) John C. Reilly (Carnage) Nick Nolte (Warrior) John Hawkes (Martha Marcy May Marlene) Andy Serkis (Rise of the Planet of the Apes) Brad Pitt (The Tree of Life) Viggo Mortensen (A Dangerous Method) George Clooney (The Ides of March) Christopher Plummer (The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo) NEW Few expected the 27-year-old -- who has almost exclusively worked in frat-pack comedy prior to this venture (with Cyrus being the one notable exception) -- to hold his own as much as he did opposite Brad Pitt in this film, the awards campaign for which is currently being revived. This performance has yet to be seen by virtually anyone not working on the film, but is said to be incredibly brief -- almost a cameo, really -- and considerably overshadowed by veteran von Sydow's. BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS Frontrunners Octavia Spencer (The Help) Shailene Woodley (The Descendants) Berenice Bejo (The Artist) Jessica Chastain (The Help) Janet McTeer (Albert Nobbs) Major Threats Sandra Bullock (Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close) Melissa McCarthy (Bridesmaids) Vanessa Redgrave (Coriolanus) Carey Mulligan (Shame) Evan Rachel Wood (The Ides of March) Judy Greer (The Descendants) Jodie Foster (Carnage) Possibilities Kate Winslet (Carnage) Jessica Chastain (The Tree of Life) Marion Cotillard (Midnight in Paris) Elizabeth Reaser (Young Adult) NEW Emily Watson (War Horse) Kim Wayans (Pariah) Judi Dench (J. Edgar) Scarlett Johansson (We Bought a Zoo) Many a young actress has been recognized in this category, and this one checks off a lot of important boxes: she's pretty, charming, and humble (see her profile/pic in the new EW, not yet online) -- plus it never hurts to have George Clooney running around saying fantastic things about you. As strong of a perf as this is from a truly great actress, the film in which it is given -- which takes classic Shakespeare and sets it in the present day -- just is not everyone's cup of tea and is not lighting a fire in the bellies of even those for whom it is. BEST ADAPTED SCREENPLAY Frontrunners Alexander Payne, Nat Faxon, Jim Rash (The Descendants) Tate Taylor (The Help) Stan Chervin, Aaron Sorkin, Steven Zaillian (Moneyball) Richard Curtis, Lee Hall (War Horse) Eric Roth (Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close) Major Threats Steven Zaillian (The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo) George Clooney, Grant Heslov (The Ides of March) Bridget O'Connor, Peter Straughan (Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy) John Logan (Hugo) Hossein Amini (Drive) Possibilities Pedro Almodovar (The Skin I Live In) Roman Polanski (Carnage) Christopher Hampton (A Dangerous Method) Cameron Crowe, Aline Brosh McKenna (We Bought a Zoo) John Logan (Coriolanus) BEST ORIGINAL SCREENPLAY Frontrunners Michel Hazanavicius (The Artist) Woody Allen (Midnight in Paris) Dustin Lance Black (J. Edgar) Mike Mills (Beginners) J.C. Chandor (Margin Call) Major Threats James Ward Byrkit, John Logan, Gore Verbinski (Rango) Diablo Cody (Young Adult) Annie Mumolo, Kristen Wiig (Bridesmaids) Tom McCarthy, Joe Tiboni (Win Win) Sean Durkin (Martha Marcy Mae Marlene) Abi Morgan, Steve McQueen (Shame) Terrence Malick (The Tree of Life) Possibilities Will Reiser (50/50) Asghar Farhadi (A Separation) James Ellroy, Oren Moverman (Rampart) Drake Doremus, Ben York Jones (Like Crazy) Jeff Nichols (Take Shelter) Abi Morgan (The Iron Lady) J.J. Abrams (Super 8) Dee Rees (Pariah) BEST ANIMATED FILM (FEATURE) Frontrunners Rango (Paramount, 3/4, PG, trailer) The Adventures of Tintin (Paramount, 12/21, PG, trailer) Cars 2 (Disney, 6/24, G, trailer) Happy Feet 2 (Warner Bros., 11/18, PG, trailer) Puss in Boots (DreamWorks, 11/4, PG, trailer) Major Threats Kung Fu Panda 2 (DreamWorks, 5/26, PG, trailer) Rio (20th Century Fox, 4/15, G, trailer) Arthur Christmas (Sony, 11/23, PG, trailer) Possibilities Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chip-Wrecked (20th Century Fox, 12/11, TBA, trailer) Winnie the Pooh (Disney, 7/15, G, trailer) The Smurfs (Sony, 7/29, PG, trailer) The Lion of Judah (Animated Family Films, 6/3, TBA, trailer) BEST DOCUMENTARY FILM (FEATURE) Frontrunners Project Nim (Roadside Attractions, 7/8, PG-13, trailer) Buck (IFC Films, 6/17, PG, trailer) If a Tree Falls (Oscilloscope, 6/22, TBA, trailer) Bill Cunningham NY (Zeitgeist Films, 3/16, TBA, trailer) Battle for Brooklyn (TBA, 6/17, TBA, trailer) Major Threats Better This World (Bullfrog Films, 8/26, TBA, trailer) Hell and Back Again (Docurama Films, 10/5, TBA, trailer) Pina (Sundance Selects, 12/23, TBA, trailer) Sing Your Song (HBO Documentary Films, 9/2, TBA, trailer) Paradise Lost 3: Purgatory (HBO Documentary Films, TBA, TBA, trailer) Possibilities We Were Here (Red Flag Releasing, 9/?, TBA, trailer) Undefeated (The Weinstein Company, 2/10, TBA, TBA) Semper Fi: Always Faithful (TBA, TBA, TBA, trailer) Under Fire: Journalists in Combat (TBA, TBA, TBA, trailer) Jane's Journey (First Run Features, TBA, TBA, trailer) BEST FOREIGN LANGUAGE FILM Frontrunners A Separation (Iran) Where Do We Go Now? LUCAS AKOSKINProducer-thesp, ArgentinaLos Angeles-based Lucas Akoskin, 32, has been called the King of Shorts, a tag he doesn't like, since 2008 when he pioneered the innovative "Terra Shorts," a collection of independent stories woven together by the Latin American experience. His latest package, "The Heartbeat of the World," in collaboration with Guillermo Arriaga and Alex Garcia, comprises four features (each made up of 10 shorts) on religion, sex, politics and substance abuse. Emir Kusturica and Jose Padilha are also on board. BENJAMIN AVILAHelmer-scribe, ArgentinaAvila takes a fresh look at Argentina's Dirty War (1976 to 1983) in his fiction debut "Clandestine Childhood," about a 12-year-old boy living with resistance fighters, based on his memories of growing up. "There was a lot of happiness and love not just fear and panic," he says. "I wanted to capture the human side without a dramatic or political tone," the same approach he used for "Nietos (identidad y memorial)," a Dirty War survivors documentary. The approach fetched "Childhood" a Films in Progress kudos at San Sebastian.BRUNO BETTATIProducer/film exec, ChileBettati has worn several hats during his film career but, from next year, he'd like to focus on producing two to three pics annually, including documentaries. He's managed to make several pics despite myriad responsibilities. Bettati, 38, is director of the Valdivia Film Festival and prexy of Chile's Film and TV Producers Assn., APCT. His latest production, Cristian Jimenez's drama "Bonsai" wowed in Cannes' Un Certain Regard. Up next is dark comedy "El verano de los peces voladores." VINICIUS COIMBRAHelmer, BrazilAfter 12 years as a leading TV Globo telenovela helmer, Coimbra's first foray into filmmaking has been an instant hit. "Matraga," based on a short story by Brazilian author Guimaraes Rosa, swept the recent Rio de Janeiro Film Festival, Latin America's largest event, nabbing five kudos including the jury and audience awards. "My goal was to allow Rosa's story to reach the public through film," he says. Coimbra is developing a version of "Macbeth," set in present-day Sao Paulo.JULIAN GIRALDOProducer/RCN Cine g.m., ColombiaGiraldo spurned the law profession 10 years ago to pursue his lifetime ambition to make films. Since launching RCN Cine in 2004, Giraldo, 40, has exec produced more than 20 pics, docus and shorts. In 2008 he co-founded production service company Shoot Colombia with helmer-scribe Felipe Aljure. Seeking a global interface for Colombian pics has led him to develop such projects as Screen Gems' "Operation Checkmate" with Greg Shapiro ("The Hurt Locker") co-producing, and Simon Brand's found-footage English-lingo drama "Default."JUAN DE DIOS LARRAINProducer, Chile"Tennis pros play different surfaces, so should producers," says Fabula founder Larrain. Larrain is an increasingly versatile force in Latin American fiction.PAULA MARKOVITCHHelmer-scribe, MexicoHer first outing as a helmer, "The Prize," proved very aptly named, topping the Guadalajara and Morelia fests and taking two artistic Berlin Silver Bears. Arguably Mexico's best film this year, the debut features a young girl and her mother hiding from Argentina's dictatorship in a gloomy seaside shanty. Clearly adept in drawing from her past, Markovitch is seeking funding for her second feature inspired by her father -- a visual artist and teacher.MATIAS MEYERHelmer-scribe, MexicoAn alumnus of the Sorbonne and Mexico's CCC film school (as was Markovitch), Meyer is clearly an art for art's sake type of filmmaker. "I am kind of a rebel, I go slowly, I film at the speed of the world," he says. "In the theater, I want there to be a moment of reflexion of internal spirituality." In "The Last Cristeros," Meyer transforms the wandering style used in previous works into a narrative advantage that bears following. MARCOS PRADOProducer-director, Brazil"Artificial Paradise," a love story set in the milieu of rave and synthetic drugs, is the fiction feature debut of Prado, who helmed "Estamira," a multi-prized social commentary docu. In October Prado, Padilha and other leading Brazilian helmers and producers founded indie distrib Nossa that will make "Paradise" its first Brazilian release early next year. DIEGO VELASCOHelmer-scribe, VenezuelaBorn in the U.S. but raised in Venezuela, Velasco drew inspiration from the harsh realities of life in that country to make his feature debut. 'Twilight' manages global buzz

When "Twilight" franchise fans are involved, a world premiere is more than just a red carpet and stars. It's a chance for promoters to build global buzz. Summit Entertainment and event producer Chad Hudson took over the plaza at L.A. Live in downtown Los Angeles the weekend before the Nov. 14, premiere. They expected fans to camp out ahead of time -- but not the more than 1,100 who pitched tents and sleeping bags. Hudson took the deluge in stride: "We knew the campers were coming, and we embraced them," he says. An urban campground had been built on the L.A. Live Plaza and adjacent street, and a weekend of activities had been planned, from outdoor screenings of earlier "Twilight" pics, and perfs by soundtrack artists. Campers received free breakfasts and snacks, and free autographed "Twilight" books (five had premiere tickets hidden inside for lucky fans). On the morning of the premiere, the Twihards were given wristbands so they could populate the outsized red carpet and stadium-sized bleachers, and fill the Nokia Theater balcony inside. Yahoo Movies partnered with Summit and Hudson in the weekend-long promotion, synchronizing all aspects of the preem and events leading up to it. Yahoo sponsored a "Twilight" premiere contest, which more than 100,000 fans entered via a dedicated Facebook page, and logged more than 265,000 Facebook interactions via the site. Yahoo also carried a live stream of the red carpet action. "We're bridging the gap between awareness, excitement and action, driving activity that fans can share with friends," explains Yahoo vice president of entertainment Sibyl Goldman. Exclusive content was created at the preem, now packaged as clips on the website, further raising awareness aimed at generating online ticket sales for the movie. Yahoo provided free wi-fi to the campers, who further expanded the "Twilight" hype via social networks and other Internet tools. With the tent city drawing extensive media coverage, it provided an excellent buzz flashpoint for the film. As a cross-platform, multimedia event, the previous "Twilight: Eclipse" premiere created more than 3 million media impressions. "Breaking Dawn" should exceed that, says Hudson, although final numbers were not available. Still, it's the kind of promotion that's not likely to be duplicated -- at least until next November at L.A. Live, when the fifth "Twilight" installment is skedded to premiere. n Contact the Variety newsroom at news@variety.com

Even warhol found laugh

"Caroline nurtured everybody. Shes so personable and nice. She was the adult figure, the parental figure in the event you needed it." -- Paul Ruebens "Everyone else is savvy and you have to be inside your best game there." -- David Alan Grier"She's the antithesis from the comedy club owner." -- Rita Rudner"NY needed a headline room and he or she gave it one. People would say, 'I desire to play Caroline's.' It absolutely was always something to goal for.Inch -- Lewis BlackComedians are "neurotic and possibly you are able to say desperate," confesses Paul Reubens, a.k.a. Pee-wee Herman. So anyone who makes plenty of comics feel content and cared for, decade after decade, ought to be doing something right. Caroline Hirsch is always that someone. "Caroline nurtured everybody," states Reubens. "She's so personable and nice. She was the adult figure, the parental figure in the event you needed it. But she didn't have to be your mother, she could just be a pal.In . Rita Rudner puts it more succinctly: "She's the antithesis from the comedy club owner." David Alan Grier signifies other vital qualities he sees in Hirsch. "She's really hot and filthy wealthy," he quips. "I've routinely asked for her to marry me. Despite the fact that she's not up to now In my opinion I'm breaking her lower progressively." Lewis Black confirms with Reubens, calling Hirsch "encouraging" together with a "sweetheart," but adds that Grier's joke hits a specific truth, that Hirsch's glamorous beauty really has inspired several decades of male comics. Public Enemy's Chuck D sues UMG

BY CHRISTOPHER MORRIS Rap act Public Enemy's frontman Chuck D has added his name to a chorus of Universal Music Group artists who have sued the company for underpayment of digital royalties. In a related matter, a federal judge has denied UMG's motion to dismiss the earlier actions filed by Rob Zombie and Rick James' estate. Chuck D (real name Carlton Douglas Ridenhour) filed his own class action against UMG in U.S. District Court in Northern California on Wednesday. The action alleges "UMG's accounting practiceshave allowed UMG to illegally withhold a substantial amount of money it receives from digital content providers" for the sale of digital downloads and master ringtones. According to the action, UMG acquired rights to Public Enemy's 1987-98 recordings when it acquired Def Jam, the rap act's label, in 1998. The suit claims "UMG is paying plaintiff and other class members roughly 25% of the royalties that it should be paying them for moneys received from music download providers." It alleges that on 1,000 digital singles downloaded at 99 cents apiece, artists are entitled to $315.85, versus $80.33 owed according to UMG's calculations. For 1,000 ringtones sold at $3 apiece, the suit claims artists are owed $660, versus $49.89 owed according to UMG's methodology. Chuck D's action cites last year's appellate court decision in F.B.T. Productions' suit against UMG and Aftermath Records, which found that F.B.T., which produced Eminem's earliest recordings, was entitled to higher digital royalties based on rates for masters licensed to third parties (Daily Variety, Sept. 7, 2010). That decision also inspired class actions filed in federal court in Northern California earlier this year by the James estate (Daily Variety, April 5) and Zombie, his band White Zombie, Whitesnake and Dave Mason (Daily Variety, May 24). On Monday, U.S. District Court Judge Susan Illston denied UMG's motion to dismiss the case based on a reading of Zombie's and James' contracts specifying the proper venue for legal action. Illston also denied UMG's motion to transfer the case from the court's Northern District to its Central District. Chuck D's action now brings the number of pending royalties cases against UMG to three. James Pizzirusso, an attorney at Hausfeld LLP in Washington, D.C., which is representing the rapper, told Daily Variety, "I can see the cases will eventually be consolidated." Kevin Smith's 'Hit Somebody' Is 'About So Much More' Than Hockey

Kevin Smith might have been calling "Hit Somebody" his "hockey movie," but when he chatted with MTV News recently, he was quick to clarify that it's much more than just that. "Now I understand some people are like, 'Dude, one hockey movie is a tough sell. Two?' I call it a hockey movie in the same way I've been calling 'Red State' a horror movie, and then people see 'Red State' and are like, 'That's not a horror movie.' Well, I don't know what else to call it," he explained. "Trust me though, it ain't a hockey movie. It's about so much more." It at least had a big enough story that he felt he needed to split what was to be his last movie as a director into his last two movies as a director. Earlier this year it was revealed that Smith was going to split "Hit Somebody" into two movies. He explained that, since it's his last movie, he wants to make sure it's done right. And if that means he'll make it in two movies, then so be it. "It just got big. And in a world where I was like, 'This is my last one, I'm going to go out on my terms,'" Smith said. "I was trying to figure out how to reduce the screenplay and shrink it but then I was like, f--k that, that's not going to do good service to the characters, to the story, to what I want to do. So I said, you know what, it's the last one, keep writing. If it becomes two, it becomes two." Smith plans on releasing the "Hit Somebody" screenplay early to the public so people can see the type of movie he's planning on. He's already talked to some of his regulars, including "Red State's" John Goodman and Kevin Pollack, about coming on board the film, and it even recently cast Michael Angarano as a Russian hockey player. After he's finished the script, Smith said he also plans on shooting Ben Affleck and Matt Damon a call to see if they'd be interested in participating in his final film as well.
